RE: My crazy trip around the world

Let me share with you a (crazy) personal story…

It was March 2014, and I had just moved out of my apartment to start a new life.

So I packed all my belongings, got rid of everything I didn’t need, and stored the rest of my stuff with my parents. All I had on me was just one tiny backpack carrying the bare essentials.

Now, if you travel internationally, you’ve probably seen one of those huge backpacking bags that the traveler can hardly lift… But that’s not the kind of weight I wanted to carry on my back.

So all I took with me was one pair of jeans, 2 shorts, 4 simple t-shirts, 4 pairs of underwear, one hoodie, one rain jacket, a pair of sneakers, a pair of flip-flops, my laptop and my iPhone.

I set out to visit New York, San Francisco, the Philippines and Thailand, which is where I met a brilliant business mentor who helped me launch my iPhone Photo Academy online course.

(Over 1000 people have now taken this course and dramatically improved their iPhone photos.)

And when I finally got home 3 months later, I still came back with just one tiny backpack.

That’s how I realized the famous quote by Antoine de St. Exupery was right…

"He Who Would Travel Happily Must Travel Light"

Now, I’m not suggesting that you travel all around the world while living out of a tiny backpack for 3 months. It worked out great for me, but this kind of travel is probably not for everyone.

But if you want to have a great travel experience, you should definitely be mindful of how much stuff you take with you on the trip… And how much you’re carrying with you in your daypack.

After all, when you’re out there exploring a new city or country, or hiking through the wilderness, the last thing you want is a heavy backpack slowing you down and making you exhausted.

Now, most DSLR photographers carry a separate camera bag to store their photo gear, and some go as far as carrying an entire backpack full of expensive lenses, tripods and more.

But does all this equipment actually make your travels more enjoyable? I don’t think so…

After all, travel isn’t that much fun when all you can think about is your heavy bag.

Your iPhone Is The Perfect Camera For Travel Photography

travel-ebook-bike

While professional camera equipment can result in sharper photos in certain light conditions, the quality differences are negligible in most day-to-day travel photography scenarios.

Unless you’re shooting sports or wildlife photography (for which using a high-quality telephoto lens makes a big difference), your iPhone travel photos will be just as good as DSLR ones.

From architecture and landscapes to portraits and food photography, your iPhone camera will consistently produce high-quality results – as long as you know how to use it correctly.

Of course, not every photo you take with your iPhone will be a masterpiece. In fact…

Most Travelers Take Mediocre iPhone Travel Photos

And as you might expect, it’s not the iPhone to be blamed for that…

The engineers at Apple have made it really easy for anyone to snap thousands of photos while on holiday, and from a technical standpoint, the quality of these photos is often amazing.

But no amount of technological progress can turn a mediocre photo into a great one. At the end of the day, a boring lifeless photo – even if it’s perfectly sharp – is still a boring lifeless photo.

So in order to take outstanding travel photos, you also have to think differently…

Avoid Taking Cliche Tourist Photos

For some reason almost all travel photos look the same… Regardless of who took them!

The chances are you’ve taken dozens if not hundreds of photos with your travel companions posing next to a famous landmark… Just like thousands of people have done before you.

And you’ve probably recreated the exact same landmark photos that thousands of visitors have taken before you, shooting from the exact same angle using the exact same composition.

Travelers love to capture their unique moments and experiences while on the road so they can recreate these amazing experiences later and share them with their loved ones back home.

But when you’re taking the exact same photo that thousands of other people have taken before you… You definitely won’t capture your unique experiences or create meaningful memories.

So how do you avoid taking cliche photos? Well, the best way to do that is to…

Capture The True Essence Of The Place

travel-ebook-musicians

What separates travel photography from any other style of photography is that you’re taking photos in a unique, unfamiliar location. So the best travel photos feature the most essential aspects of that location – especially those that are unique to that particular place.

It might be the people of a particular country, the bustle of a particular city, the signs that are unique to that particular language, or the food that makes that part of the world unique.

See what makes a particular place unique and different from what you normally encounter and focus on that in your photography. It’s usually the small details that make all the difference.

The trick is to focus on aspects of everyday life rather than on famous landmarks.

But even more importantly, your travel photography should…

Create Wonderful Memories For A Lifetime

One of the best things about travel is that it allows you to experience things you wouldn’t be able to experience otherwise. It’s these unique experiences that make life worth living…

It’s so rewarding when a photo you take – a photo that didn’t exist just a moment ago – can show your loved ones the unique and beautiful things you experienced while traveling.

And it gets even more rewarding when you look back at these moments years later when the memories are long gone, but thanks to your photos you can experience these memories again.

And when you know how to create great travel photos that show your unique experiences and capture the true essence of the place you’re visiting, you’ll keep these memories for life.

Now, how can you take travel photos that accomplish these goals?

Well, I have some great news for you…

About The Author

Mark Hemmings began his photography career in 1997 while on a business trip to Japan. Not knowing even how to work a camera prior to the trip, upon returning to his home in Canada he was encouraged by friends to pursue photography as a career.

Since that time Mark has excelled in many photographic disciplines, and currently teaches travel photography workshops and works as a professional travel and advertising photographer.

He used to carry around heavy DSLR cameras with large expensive lenses until one day Mark discovered that he was no longer having fun with travel photography. His neck was sore from the camera’s strap and his back was sore from the heavy, equipment-laden backpack.

It was time for change, and so Mark started to shoot his trips with his iPhone. From that point on his passion for photography reignited and his eyes were opened again to fantastic compositions everywhere.
